My Non-Toxic Life: The Ups, The Downs, And The Reality
Can a non-toxic life be a reality?
Let’s be real for a second.
We all want a non-toxic or low-toxic lifestyle. We scroll, we research, we swap out products. But here’s the thing: are we ever really going to get to some perfect, 100% non-toxic place? And do we even need to?
What if you can’t make every swap?
What if you just plain don’t want to?
I’ve been on this non-toxic journey for about 14 years now. I share tips, I teach others how to cut back on exposure, and I’ve made a ton of swaps myself. But let me tell you something really honest: I don’t follow all of my own advice all the time. Sometimes, I literally throw my hands up and say, “Who cares right now?”
Because here’s the truth… we can’t cut ourselves off from the world and live in a plastic bubble. And even if we did, the bubble itself would probably be off-gassing fumes.
When “I Don’t Care” Wins

This all hit me recently when I realized how freeing it can feel to just not care sometimes. To relax. To not obsess. And you know what? That’s perfectly OK.
Take my summer beach camping trips. I go solo (highly recommend, by the way). Since I’m alone, I sleep in my car. Yep, surrounded by polyurethane foam seats, dashboard plastics, and who knows what else floating in the air. Do I care? Nope.
My tent? It has a weatherproof coating. Don’t care.
The ice in my cooler? Pretty sure it’s treated with something so it doesn’t melt as fast. Don’t care.
That ice goes right into my wine glass. And yes, I drink too much wine on vacation. Still don’t care.
After a swim in the ocean, I grab an ice cream sandwich from the camp store and walk back to my site, dripping saltwater all over the place, feeling like a kid again. I have never, not once, looked at the ingredient list. Don’t care.
And it’s not just camping.
- Jury duty? No glass or silverware allowed. Guess who’s eating out of plastic containers with plastic forks? This girl. Don’t care.
- Wineries with friends? I usually stick to organic wine, but that day I drank whatever they poured. Don’t care.
See the theme? Sometimes you just have to live your life.
The Other Side of the Non-Toxic Life Coin

Here’s the thing: if we let the fear of toxins run our lives, that stress isn’t healthy either. In fact, there are even labels for it:
- Worry too much about food toxins? That’s called orthorexia.
- Obsessed with chemicals in products? That’s called chemophobia.
Neither is a good place to live. Stress is toxic too.
When I studied health coaching, I learned about primary food and secondary food.
- Secondary food is what goes on your plate – actual food.
- Primary food is everything else – your relationships, your career, your joy, your life experiences.
Both feed you. And honestly? Sometimes that ice cream sandwich on the beach or drinking wine feeds my soul way more than a perfectly clean, toxin-free home ever could.
My Takeaway After 14 Years of A Non-Toxic Life
You don’t have to do everything. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to carry guilt for not checking every single label or making every single swap.
Limit toxins where you can – that matters. But also give yourself permission to not care sometimes. Your body already has built-in detox pathways (your liver, your kidneys, etc.), and they’re pretty darn good at their job when you’re not overloading them 24/7.
So here’s the bottom line:
Do what you can, when you can.
Enjoy your life.
And don’t let fear of toxins steal your joy.
Because at the end of the day, life isn’t about perfection – it’s about experiences and being happy.
Screw the worry.
So now I’m curious, what’s your “I don’t care” moment? You know, the thing you do even though you know it’s not exactly toxin-free (like my wine + ice combo or that freakin’ delicious camp-store ice cream sandwich). Do you ever just throw your hands up and say, “Forget it, I’m living my life”? If you had to pick one swap to not stress about, what would it be? Spill it in the comments, I promise, no judgment here!
